Lead Ophthalmic Technician – Tulsa Location
Description
The Lead Ophthalmic Technician serves as a senior clinical resource and provides day-to-day guidance and support to the ophthalmic technician team. This position works closely with physicians, clinic management, and staff to promote efficient clinic flow, high-quality patient care, and consistent clinical standards.
The Lead Ophthalmic Technician is expected to lead by example, provide hands-on support to the clinical team, assist with training and development, and help identify and resolve workflow or patient-care concerns. This is a working lead position that maintains regular ophthalmic technician responsibilities while providing additional leadership and coordination for the clinical team.
Responsibilities
- Provides day-to-day guidance, support, and direction to ophthalmic technicians while maintaining an active role in patient care.
- Assists with coordinating daily technician assignments and clinic flow to ensure physicians and patients are supported efficiently.
- Works closely with clinic management to identify staffing, workflow, scheduling, and operational needs.
- Serves as a clinical resource for ophthalmic technicians and assists staff with questions regarding procedures, testing, equipment, and physician protocols.
- Assists with the orientation, training, and ongoing development of new and existing ophthalmic technicians.
- Provides coaching and feedback to technicians regarding clinical skills, productivity, teamwork, professionalism, patient experience, and adherence to established policies and procedures.
- Communicates employee performance or conduct concerns to clinic management and assists with follow-up when requested.
- Helps promote accountability and consistency in clinical processes, physician preferences, documentation, and patient care standards.
- Maintains strong clinical knowledge and technical expertise, including obtaining and recording patient histories, performing ophthalmic testing, assisting physicians with patient care, and assisting with minor outpatient procedures.
- Maintains proficiency in the operation and proper use of ophthalmic testing equipment.
- Assists with resolving physician and patient concerns related to clinic flow, technical quality, scheduling, communication, and customer service.
- Monitors clinic workflow throughout the day and assists with adjustments necessary to maintain efficient patient flow.
- Promotes effective communication and teamwork among technicians, physicians, front office staff, and clinic management.
- Helps ensure clinical areas are properly stocked, organized, clean, and prepared for patient care.
- Supports compliance with patient confidentiality requirements, OSHA standards, infection control procedures, and other applicable policies and regulations.
- Participates in staff meetings, training, and other clinic initiatives as requested.
- Maintains required licenses and certifications as determined by management.
- Travels to satellite locations and other clinic sites as necessary to support staffing, training, and operational needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What Are We Looking for in Our Next New Hire?
- Minimum of one year of ophthalmic technician experience; previous lead, training, or supervisory experience preferred.
- COA or COT certification through JCAHPO preferred, or an equivalent level of ophthalmic or medical training and experience.
- Strong clinical ophthalmic skills and knowledge of ophthalmic testing, terminology, procedures, and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead by example and provide positive guidance and support to team members.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, leadership, and patient service skills.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and assist with training and development of clinical staff.
- High level of professional integrity and ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, management, employees, and patients with professionalism, poise, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities and work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic clinical environment.
- Knowledge of medical office operations, patient confidentiality requirements, OSHA standards, infection control practices, and clinical workflow.
